A Hotel in the Sky

For our first wedding anniversary my husband and I decided to treat ourselves to a stay in the Shangri-La Hotel in The Shard. It is one of the buildings that I have been desperate to get inside ever since we moved to London, it is stunning and just towers over the whole city so that you can see it almost everywhere. It is actually the tallest building in Western Europe and the hotel is based on floors 35-52.

Our room was on floor 48 and as a Deluxe City View Room it was HUGE, with the biggest bed I've ever slept in and floor to ceiling windows so that you could take in the amazing views.

The bathroom was also huge and had an enormous tub at one end...

...and an equally as spacious shower at the other.

You can't actually see it in the above picture but this was the view from the shower...

I know, unbelievable. Tower Bridge is my favourite landmark in London so this was just perfect, and wait until you see it all lit up later on.

It also had his and hers sinks and yes, that is a TV in the mirror.

The toiletries were all luxury, as you would expect.

We checked at 3pm and were told that it was family time in the Sky Pool until 5pm so decided to wait until then (when it would be child free) to head up. We enjoyed a bottle of champagne and relaxed...

...while using these handy binoculars to explore the sights that we could see in more detail.

At 5pm on the dot we headed to the 52nd floor, and even had the pool to ourselves.

So after a few lengths, I got the chance to take in the views.

If you are lucky enough to get one of the 8 loungers, it is so peaceful to just have a lie down with a chilled water and a magazine.

We got back to our room around 6.30pm and were quite hungry after our swim, but didn't want to rush getting ready and so we decided to order room service for dinner and enjoy the views from our room. While we waited I lit my favourite Jo Malone candle and took a bubble bath in the huge tub.

We had expected to eat on the small marble table which was in our room but when our food arrived they actually brought it up on a larger table, dressed with a table cloth. Perfect. The food was within a heated compartment beneath the table so it was still piping hot when it was served.

I had the chicken, which came with fries and béarnaise sauce and ordered a side of veggies, Mr B had the burger. Both meals were cooked to perfection.

By the time we finished our meal London was lit up beautifully.

So we enjoyed the rest of our wine before getting ready to go to the bar for a few cocktails.

We couldn't resist taking a lift selfie as we made our way back to floor 52.

As expected there was a waiting list to get a window seat but we had barely finished our first cocktail when we were moved to a prime spot.

                                                    A cocktail in a birdcage...amazing!

Despite the (amazing) cocktails I got up early and decided to check out the gym, which was also on floor 52. Mr B was still sleeping so I left him a note to meet me at the pool when he got up. As with every other place, the gym also has stunning views. What a way to workout!

The pool was so peaceful first thing and I would definitely recommend getting up early to enjoy this as family time (when children are allowed in the pool) begins at 9am, so I would imagine it is less peaceful after this time.

What other building could cast a shadow this impressive...?!

We then headed back to our room to enjoy a spot of breakfast and get ready before checking out at 12pm.

As you can imagine, we didn't want to leave! We were so glad it was the Bank Holiday and so we still had a day off work to enjoy and also, a meal at 100 Wardour Street to look forward to on the Tuesday (which was the actual day of our anniversary).

Shangri-La....we will be back.

xx Jade xx
